Among the victims are 13 children, local media report. Authorities have activated more than a dozen alarms to warn of torrential rains even on Thursday evening.
Explosion crews have halted searches for missing persons due to the risk of further landslides. But the losers are not small. 116 people are still missing, and hopes of survival are fading.
On Tuesday, Petropolis faced more than six hours of rainfall.
State Governor Claudio Castro said the city experienced the heaviest rain since 1932 as dozens of homes were covered in mud.
Rio de Janeiro and surrounding regions are often hit by torrential rains in the first three months of the year, January, February and March.
In 2011, more than 900 people died as a result of a storm in the mountainous regions of Rio de Janeiro, including Petropolis, the largest natural disaster that has ever occurred in Brazil.
