A man from Kansas who spent 12 years behind bars after being unjustly convicted of murder has died of cancer just 108 days after being acquitted and released.
Olin ‘Pete’ Coones Jr., 64, died in Kansas City of cancer. The disease, according to his lawyers from the Midwest Innocence Project, had not been diagnosed and had remained untreated while he was in prison. “At this age, he re-entered the free world with a broken body,” said the lawyers.
“They let him meet his relatives only 3 and a half months before he died. He had been praying for this day for years. “Pete loved his family very much,” they added. Coones was sentenced to life in prison in 2008 for the murder of a couple, Kathleen and Carl Schroll. Although he always claimed his innocence, they did not believe him, and only recently was it learned that he had been trapped, and that prosecutors had only concealed important evidence that would have acquitted him from the beginning.
