Wreaths were laid today in the waters near the Italian island of Giglio where 10 years ago the luxury cruise Costa Concordia sank where 32 people lost their lives.
The ship’s captain, Francesco Schettino, is currently serving a 16-year prison sentence as the main culprit. The Costa Concordia got stuck in the shallowness of the island and then capsized in icy waters when most of its lifeboats were unusable.
Passenger Umberto Trotti managed to put in a lifeboat his wife Fjorda and two children, but himself was left behind. “It was instinctive, the family needed me. So I jumped on the boat from 3-4 meters. “I fell on a healthy German, I must have hurt the deserter,” he recalled.
Trotti added that they were not sure if they should go to today’s ceremony in Giglio, where the 10th anniversary will be marked with a candlelight vigil.
Ships will ring their sirens in homage, and churches will ring their bells. The cruise with over 4000 people from 70 different countries, remained in the shallows when the passengers were having dinner.
Its captain Schettino was sentenced to 16 years in prison for the poor condition of lifeboats and delays in sounding the tragedy alarm.
