Divers were still searching for victims today as at least 10 people were found dead from the horrific collapse of the face of a rock in a Brazilian lake, which fell on boats filled with tourists below it.
Edgard Estevo, the commander of the fire brigade, said that the serious incident took place on Saturday on Lake Furnas, between the towns of Sao Jose da Barra and the Capitolio. Emergency crews had deployed helicopters in chaotic efforts to rescue stranded tourists on the lake.
“We are suffering the consequences of the heavy rains that have softened the stone structures of Lake Furnas, in the Capitolio,” wrote local mayor Romeu Zema on social media. “I am in solidarity with the families of the victims in these difficult moments.
Local network Jornal O Globo wrote that at least seven dead were in a boat called “Jesus” hit hardest by the tragic collapse.
The Brazilian Navy was assisting in the investigation of the accident. The video showed several small boats hovering around the picturesque bay, when the giant mass of rock breaks off the rocky face and collides, trapping at least one of the boats.
Heavy rains of recent days have caused many residents to flee the area.
