Donations and loans worth 9.1 billion euros have been raised at an international donors’ conference to raise money for Ukrainian refugees in Warsaw.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in a video message at the conference promised 425 million euros in humanitarian aid and development aid to Ukraine and neighboring countries from Germany. To this is added 70 million euros in medical assistance. “Germany stands by Ukraine,” Scholz said.
The European Commission has made available 1 billion euros for Ukraine. In addition to the aid, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development will make an additional 1 billion euros available to people displaced by the war, EC President Ursula von der Leyen said in Warsaw. “600 million euros will go to Ukraine and the Ukrainian authorities and partly to the United Nations.”
And 400 million euros go to the main countries that have received the largest number of refugees. The conference was organized by the European Commission, the non-governmental organization Global Citizen, and the Canadian government. Funds will also go to UN projects. Poland has so far hosted more than 2.5 million of the 4.4 million refugees who have been forced out of war zones in Ukraine.
